How to Create an Emergency Plan for Your Pets

Being prepared can save your pets life. That’s why is it important for you and your family to come up with an escape plan if a disaster occurred.

Step 1:

Firstly, you have to figure out what kind of disasters are likely to occur in the area that you live in; man-made disasters and natural disasters.

Man-made disasters: They have an element of human intent, negligence or error involving a failure of a man-made system, for example: house fire, car accident, chemical or oil spills, and riots.

Natural disasters: It is an unforeseen occurrence of an event that causes harm to society, it damages the environment and the people living in it. Some of them are landslides, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and tornados.

Step 2:

The plan:

Write down your plan and go over it with your family. Your plan should include medical care, food, shelter, supplies that you need and their location, and emergency phone numbers. You can ask advice from people in your community who work with animals like a veterinarian, pet store owners, and pet sitters.

Step 3:

Have a survival kit: Pack as much as you can in one location so if a disaster happens you won’t have to be running around the house gathering the supplies.

Your kit should include:

· A copy of your plan

· A first aid kit

· Sturdy leashes, harnesses and/or carriers to transport pets safely

· Food, drinking water, bowls

· Medications and copies of medical records

· name and number of your veterinarian

· Current photos of you with your pet(s) in case they get lost

· Pet beds and toys

· Blankets for both humans and animals

· Pet ID Tag and have them microchipped

We hope that you won’t have to live through any of these horrible disasters, but it’s best to be prepared and plan ahead because it’s the key to keeping you, your family, and your pet safe.
